Nik Weis - St. Urbans Hof

Bockstein Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) Riesling 2020

Already the bouquet, with its smoky, spicy and floral nature, is clear evidence of the wine's origins: citrus, elderberry, lilac, violet and melon meet mineral, tarry ashy notes and merge to create an intense impression that continues to concentrate on the palate. Here the firm and tightly woven structure of the Riesling and the site come to the fore, resulting in a silky elegance and great finesse. The long finish of the wine offers enough space for the development of all the density and depth.

The Nik Weis - St. Urbans-Hof winery began making dry Rieslings as early as the 1970s, when the majority of Mosel vintners were still producing exclusively sweet wines. A valuable wealth of experience that continues to be enriched to this day. In order to create the best possible growing conditions in the vineyard and produce authentic wines with a clear guarantee of origin in taste, Nik Weis and his team radically rely on manual labor and a particularly selective hand harvest, sometimes over several passes. Only completely healthy and fully ripe grapes with a high aromatic complexity form the basis for his GGs. The wines ferment spontaneously in stainless steel tanks and, depending on the vintage, are aged in traditional Moselfuder (1000 l). A late filling in the summer of the following year allows the wines a long maturation and the necessary time for flavor development

Situated in a valley foothill of the Saar River, the Ockfener Bockstein is a steep south-southwest exposure, deprived of its full number of hours of sunshine by no shade from other mountains. The soil consists mostly of a coarse, bouldery Devonian slate. Because there is a forest on the ridge, the water flow in the Bockstein is extremely good. Today, the Ockfener Bockstein is composed "S-shaped" of a convex and concave part, between which a strict distinction was made until the site reform in 1971. The majority of our 10 ha property is located in the original convex part of the Bockstein, where some of the most expensive and famous Saar wines used to grow. These fillet pieces named "Zickelgarten", "Neuwies" or "oberster Bockstein" have been the clear top plots of the steep slope for centuries and convey the unique terroir particularly intensively. Wines from the Ockfener Bockstein are characterized by a smoky-mineral character and a fine spiciness. They are probably the most distinctive and polished Rieslings of our winery.

Nik Weis - St. Urbans Hof

The St. Urbanshof wine estate has its roots in one of the most beautiful sunny locations on the Moselle: an elegant loop of the river follows the course of the sun along the gently sloping vineyards, where the wine estate was built and founded in 1947 by Nicolaus Weis under the name "St. Urbans-Hof" on an enchanting hill. Since 1997, Nik Weis, the third generation, has been running the estate on an area of around 35 hectares, from which he produces refined delicacies, specialising in Riesling.
