Goldtröpfchen Auslese Goldkapsel (Selection) 2023

Enormously dense, aromatic and fragrant nose with notes of slate, honey, red berries and tropical fruits. On the palate, flavors of ripe fruits and berries of all kinds, the honey sweetness is wonderfully balanced by the acidity and refreshing minerality. Great length and complexity.

Vineyard and soil

Goldtröpfchen is a south-facing, 60-hectare steep slope made of clayey gray slate that rises directly above the small town of Piesport. Even in hot and dry years, this slope has a sufficient water supply thanks to the forests above it. Yields in this top site are extremely reduced (50 hl/ha) to achieve a maximum of aromas and the greatest possible density in the wine, allowing it to age for many years in the bottle.

Wine production

The grapes, harvested manually in early November, are sorted in the vineyard for optimal ripeness. Only the most aromatic berries are pressed. After a 12-hour maceration, the grapes are gently pressed, and the must is fermented with the vineyard's own yeasts. After fermentation in traditional casks, the wine remains in these casks on the lees for an additional 6-8 months and is filtered only once just before bottling.

Development

Still restless as a young wine, this Great Growth gains harmony and expression after 3-5 years. It reaches its peak between 8 and 10 years of age and can be kept for another decade. The aroma develops towards ripe dried fruits and aromatic herbs while maintaining a mineral freshness and slenderness.

Drinking recommendation

Served not too cool at 12°C, this wine benefits from some time in the air, and even decanting can be worthwhile. It is a great companion to light meat, fish, and seafood, which can also be slightly more aromatically seasoned.

Haart

The Haart winery in Piesport is a jewel on the Moselle. The Haart family has been growing wine here since 1337 and has earned a reputation as one of the oldest bourgeois wine estates in Europe. The winery is located on the steep slope of the Piesport Goldtröpfchen, and just a few steps away is the oldest Roman wine press on the Moselle.
