Laurentius Lay Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) Riesling 2020
Brown spices such as nutmeg, clove and anise meet white pepper and the tangy, tart fruit aromas of grated orange peel, white peach and ripe apricot, which continue on the palate. There are also toasty aromas, subtle bitter liqueur, hints of gingerbread, juniper berry and ginger, as well as grapefruit notes and a noticeable hint of grated citrus peel. Laurentiuslay GG focuses on richness, density and structure and is characterized by a tightly woven web of perfectly balanced secondary and tertiary aromas.

The Nik Weis - St. Urbans-Hof winery began making dry Rieslings as early as the 1970s, when the majority of Mosel vintners were still producing exclusively sweet wines. A valuable wealth of experience that continues to be enriched to this day. In order to create the best possible growing conditions in the vineyard and produce authentic wines with a clear guarantee of origin in taste, Nik Weis and his team radically rely on manual labor and a particularly selective hand harvest, sometimes over several passes. Only completely healthy and fully ripe grapes with a high aromatic complexity form the basis for his GGs. The wines ferment spontaneously in stainless steel tanks and, depending on the vintage, are aged in traditional Moselfuder (1000 l). A late filling in the summer of the following year allows the wines a long maturation and the necessary time for flavor development

As a food companion Laurentiuslay GG shines especially with roast goose with red cabbage and chestnuts, boeuf bourguignon, saddle of venison with cranberries, sauerbraten (Rhenish style with Printensauce), roast beef with sauce tartar or pigeon with cherry sauce and roasted artichokes.
Laurentiuslay is our warmest vineyard site and has always been considered the most prestigious site in our home community of Leiwen. "Lay" is an old German word for slate and perfectly describes the barren, steep soil. It is precisely because of the steepness and the lack of classic development paths within the site that the numerous terraced sites have been able to remain in their original state. As a result, the vines of our vineyards have a rather high average age and root several meters deep into the barren steep slope. The Gewannbezeichnung, in which vineyards are located, is called Bläsberg, because it is very windy there at all times. This is good for us, because the grapes dry out naturally and can ripen longer on the vine. At the same time, the berries get a thick skin, which is also where most of the aromas are formed. As a result, we harvest Riesling grapes of unique quality every year in the Laurentiuslay, which cover the entire spectrum of first-class Mosel wines from dry VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, to fruity-sweet Spätlesen, to noble-sweet Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen.
Nik Weis - St. Urbans Hof
The St. Urbanshof wine estate has its roots in one of the most beautiful sunny locations on the Moselle: an elegant loop of the river follows the course of the sun along the gently sloping vineyards, where the wine estate was built and founded in 1947 by Nicolaus Weis under the name "St. Urbans-Hof" on an enchanting hill. Since 1997, Nik Weis, the third generation, has been running the estate on an area of around 35 hectares, from which he produces refined delicacies, specialising in Riesling.
