Ohligsberg Kabinett (fruity) 2023

On the nose, ripe stone fruits and lemon, accompanied by a stony schist minerality. On the palate, the wine is dense, juicy and yet light and elegant, with fruits such as pineapple and highly ripe lemons. The fresh acidity and salty minerality promise great aging potential.

Vineyard and soil

Ohligsberg is a very steep vineyard, southwest facing, located on the banks of the Moselle near the small village of Wintrich. The soil is composed of coarse, hard, blue-gray slate mixed with iron oxide-containing quartz. This soil warms up quickly in the sun and brings the Riesling grapes to a particularly high ripeness. At the same time, cold air flows from the heights of the Hunsrück into the Moselle valley at night through a nearby side valley. This allows the grapes to retain their freshness, acidity and aroma. Ohligsberg is a forgotten classic among the famous Moselle vineyards, around 1900, wines from this site fetched the highest prices at auctions.

Wine production

The grapes are harvested in mid-October, of course by hand in the steep slope. The must ferments with natural yeasts in the barrel in the cool Piesport slate cellar. The wine is then aged on the full lees in the barrel for up to 24 months.

Development

A promising wine even in its youth, which gains in complexity and expression with age, best after 8 years and more.

Drinking recommendation

Served cool (9-12°C), this Kabinett is an excellent aperitif or an elegant companion to Asian or spicy dishes. After several years of aging, the natural fruit sweetness is barely perceptible and it can be surprisingly versatile with many dishes.

Haart

The Haart winery in Piesport is a jewel on the Moselle. The Haart family has been growing wine here since 1337 and has earned a reputation as one of the oldest bourgeois wine estates in Europe. The winery is located on the steep slope of the Piesport Goldtröpfchen, and just a few steps away is the oldest Roman wine press on the Moselle.
