Steep slate slopes, long sun exposure and a perfect microclimate

The small village of Ürzig on the Moselle has long been a famous name among wine connoisseurs. Here, the first class steep slopes "Ürziger Würzgarten" and the "Erdener Treppchen" are located directly on the outskirts of the village. An extended bend of the Moselle offers the best conditions for great wines: long sun exposure, perfect slope inclination of the sites, soils rich in stones and the resulting microclimate. Each year, the wines from these sites win many awards around the world and are probably the epitome of German Riesling from the Mosel. Here, the owner Robert Eymael has been running the winery since 1994.

The different slate soils characterize gives every vine a different character

The Mönchhof winery grows its Riesling vines, some of which are 100 years old, on first-class steep slopes. The "Ürziger Würzgarten", with its red slate unique to the Moselle, produces intensely mineral, powerful Rieslings with a finesse-rich fruit aroma. The Spätlese inspires tangy and juice. Fine gray slate minerality characterizes the Grand Lay, which spoils the palate fruity-fresh and well-structured. Harmonious, delicate and racy, the Rieslings from the "Erdener Treppchen" are just as much fun as the sweet Auslese with clear fruit from the "Erdener Prälat". The fruity Pinot Blanc offers an aromatic Riesling alternative, and the Mönchhof winery also caters to red wine lovers with a Pinot Noir.

In harmony with nature

It is Philipp Conzen who is in charge in the vineyard. He carefully takes care of the soil and vines at the Mönchhof winery, always remaining in harmony with nature. In favor of high quality, he carefully reduces yields. The selectively harvested grapes are gently vinified in the cellar. Aging takes place in the old vaulted cellar, where the conditions are ideal. The Mönchhof winery vinifies its wines exclusively in wooden barrels and has developed its own inimitable style.

Wines from the winery Mönchhof and Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben show themselves from the bouquet particularly delicate, floral and delicately fruity; one smells aromas of peach, citrus zest (peel) and sometimes elderflower - just a touch of exoticism and this inimitable slate spice, as it exists only in Mosel wines. The wines are pleasantly dry, are juicy in freshness, spray playful fruit aromas in the throat and have a considerable mineral impression. Even with moderate alcohol levels, the Riesling lingers long in the finish.

High Ambitions high potential

A portfolio "that clearly shows higher ambitions", says Gault Millau for the traditional wine estate Mönchhof in Ürzig on the Moselle.  The owners and administrators understand how to make the most of the potential of the top terroirs and the very old bare-root vines in the wines. Clearly marked by the terroir, the Rieslings have fruit and minerality and each has its own individual character.
It was Robert Eymael who took over the management of the Mönchhof wine estate in 1994 and put it back on track with his quality-conscious individualism. The excellent Rieslings are also highly regarded internationally.
