Passion and know How in priviledged locations for 9 generations

The winery, which is situated a little way back in Trittenheim, has been run by the fourth generation of Franz-Josef Eifel since 1985. Today it has 5 hectares of vineyards in the Apotheke and Altärchen vineyards of Trittenheim. The Jungheld and Sonnenfels terroirs are particularly noteworthy. With vines up to 80 years old, 95 percent of the vineyards are planted with Riesling, with some Pinot Blanc and, in the meantime, a small share of Scheurebe. The vineyards are organically cultivated (Ecovin).

Priviledged locations and precise Know How

The grape harvest is basically done by hand in up to three passes. After a whole bunch pressing, a cool and long fermentation takes place with partly own yeasts, which lasts up to three months for dry wines. The wines are vinified partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in Fuder barrels, 60% dry and semi-dry, and 40% fruit-sweet or noble sweet as Auslese, Trockenbeerenauslese or ice wine.

Trittenheimer Apotheke our Passion and Capital

The world-famous Trittenheimer Apotheke, located on the right bank of the Moselle opposite the village of the same name, is undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in the Moselle. Thanks to the depth of the blue slate, the estate produces very mineral Rieslings. The slate stores the heat of the sun during the day and gives it back to the vines during the night. Because the site faces southwest, the vines benefit from the sun's rays until the evening. These deeply rooted old vines guarantee year after year young and elegant Rieslings with an enormous development potential. The name "Apotheke" probably comes from "Abtsberg", a foundation of the Trier abbey.

Three levels of premium wines

As a rule, the wines are fermented spontaneously, slowly and cool, partly with the winemaker's own yeasts. They are matured in stainless steel tanks and in barriques.

The range is divided into three levels.

1. the basis is formed by cabinet wines and the Riesling "Su wie frieja", which comes from a steep slope parcel newly planted in 2005.

2. the middle segment is made up of the Apotheke's steep-slope wines from 50-year-old vines planted between 1961 and 1964, each dry, semi-dry and sweet; the semi-dry version comes from the Jungheld, a partial vineyard of the Apotheke.

3. The top wines, also dry, semi-dry and sweet, come from small rock terraces with vines up to 80 years old from the pharmacy and are called Sonnenfels, "Die große Leidenschaft" and Goldstückchen.

Occasionally, ice wines and Beerenauslesen are also produced. As a rule, the wines are fermented spontaneously, but Franz-Josef Eifel does not think of imposing too many rules on himself or vinifying the wines according to the current fashion.

"Sometimes one tends to underestimate the wines of this estate because they are never lush and loud, but fine, very well balanced, spicy, with length and persistence that only gradually reveals itself."
