Wine estate Jos. Joh. Christoffel Erben
For decades, the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben winery in Ürzig has stood for "typical Mosel Rieslings at a high level," according to Gault Millau. The vines, some of which are more than 100 years old, grow on steep slate slopes, and Robert Eymael, who now runs the winery, knows how to make the most of them.

Steep slate slopes in Ürzig from root-firm Riesling grapes
The entire vineyards of the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben are located in the best steep slopes of Ürzig (Ürziger Würzgarten) and Erden (Erdener Treppchen). The Riesling vines, most of which are root-firm, are up to 100 years old. The small yields of these plots are of high quality and the basis for the exquisite wines. The work in these sites is very laborious, as they can only be cultivated by hand. The oenologist and winery manager Philippe Conzen ensures today that tradition passed down and the knowledge of modernity are reflected in the wines. Modern Riesling wines from an old terroir!

Steep vineyards our capital
The steep Mosel top sites "Ürziger Würzgarten" and "Erdener Treppchen" are the capital of the winery Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben. The red slate in the "Würzgarten" produces just as fresh-finesse-rich Kabinett as powerful-concentrated Spätlese from "old vines" with pure fruit.
Even a Großes Gewächs is produced by the top vineyard of the traditional winery. This Riesling shows elegant citrus-passion fruit notes. From the "Treppchen" the winery Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben receives mineral-racy Spätlese as well as harmonious and at the same time gripping Kabinett.
Selected grapes and slow fermentation
Exclusively bare-root Riesling vines grow in the vineyards of the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben, some of which are over 100 years old. The yields are naturally low, but of high quality and intense aroma. Of course, this treasure is maintained with the utmost care. In order to maintain the quality of the vineyard in the wine, the grapes are selected by hand during the late harvest. In this way, only well ripened grapes are gently processed. The fermentation is done slowly in traditional barrels with the estate's own yeasts, which gives the wines of the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben's wines have a strong terroir character.

Wines from the winery Mönchhof and Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben show themselves from the bouquet particularly delicate, floral and delicately fruity; one smells aromas of peach, citrus zest (peel) and sometimes elderflower - just a touch of exoticism and this inimitable slate spice, as it exists only in Mosel wines. The wines are pleasantly dry, are juicy in freshness, spray playful fruit aromas in the throat and have a considerable mineral impression. Even with moderate alcohol levels, the Riesling lingers long in the finish.
Selection and making of..
The Riesling vines, most of which have roots, are sometimes up to 100 years old. The small yields of these plots are of high quality and form the basis for exquisite wines. The work in these vineyards is very demanding, as they can only be cultivated by hand.
As in the past, the spontaneously fermented wines are aged in wooden barrels without the addition of chemical fining agents. Classic Moselle Rieslings in a modern dress, fresh and fruity with the aromas of the Moselle slate.
