Steep slate slopes in Brauneberg

The grandson of Willi Haag, who gave the estate its name, Marcus Haag continues the 500-year-old winery in the good family tradition. Instead of going mainstream, the Willi Haag winery has specialised in grape variety and terroir. The estate has excellent south-facing sites with slate weathered soils, over 95% of which are steep and escarpment sites. On these sites, Marcus Haag cultivates exclusively Riesling and makes three-quarters of it into wines with a residual sweetness.

Steep vineyards our capital

The steep Mosel top sites "Ürziger Würzgarten" and "Erdener Treppchen" are the capital of the winery Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben. The red slate in the "Würzgarten" produces just as fresh-finesse-rich Kabinett as powerful-concentrated Spätlese from "old vines" with pure fruit.

Even a Großes Gewächs is produced by the top vineyard of the traditional winery. This Riesling shows elegant citrus-passion fruit notes. From the "Treppchen" the winery Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben receives mineral-racy Spätlese as well as harmonious and at the same time gripping Kabinett.

Selected grapes and slow fermentation

Exclusively Riesling is cultivated on the 6 hectares of the Willi Haag winery in steep and steepest sites. Ideal conditions prevail here, on weathered slate, for this typical Moselle grape variety. Besides storing the warmth of the sun, the soil also provides the Riesling with character-building minerals.
The harvest is deliberately kept low by Marcus Haag and averages 60 hl of wine per hectare. 70% of this is vinified with residual sweetness, including the highly awarded Auslesen and Beerenauslesen from the Juffer-Sonnenuhr, while the rest is vinified dry and semi-dry. In addition to the wines, a fine Riesling sparkling wine is also produced in Willi Haag's cellar.

Tradition meets Innovation

We combine modernity with tradition. Wine is tradition, a selective hand harvest as an important prerequisite for high-quality wines and modern cellar techniques. Thus, the aging of wines takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the work in the vineyard with the use of machinery.

Marcus Haag skillfully and successfully combines viticultural tradition with modern approaches to technology in the vineyard and cellar. It's a balancing act that bears fruit, and he succeeds brilliantly year after year. Half of Haag's Rieslings are exported, which explains the high proportion of residually sweet wines. After all, the classic and unmistakable Moselle style is particularly appreciated abroad, and Marcus Haag is a true master of his craft.
