World famous Riesling wines from Zeltingen since 1661

The history of the Selbach-Oster wine estate dates back to the middle of the 17th century. Wine growing has been practised on the family estate since 1661. The experience and traditions are still passed on from generation to generation. The approximately 22 hectares of vineyards are located in the surrounding villages of Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel. Many of the vineyards are still home to old Riesling vines with their roots intact, on which grapes with a particularly fine fruitiness grow.

Timeless tradition is the Motto for highest quality standards

The owners are Barbara and Johann Selbach, and the next generation, Hannah and Sebastian, is ready to take over. A timeless tradition is the motto by which the Selbach-Oster winery is managed and the best wine quality is produced. The partially 100-year-old and rootless vines are an example of this. 98 percent of the vines are Riesling. The small and highly aromatic berries of the old Riesling vines produce wines coveted by connoisseurs worldwide. Together with expert employees, the Selbach-Oster family produces excellently rated wines and sparkling wines. The winery is one of the best wineries in Germany and in the top group of the Moselle.

Finest Riesling wines from the steep vineyards of Zeltingen and surroundings

The majority of the vineyards face south. The intense heat of the sun on the southern slopes, combined with the river that serves as a heat accumulator, allows the production of wines with an enormous diversity of aromas. The particular minerality and elegance of the wines are due to the stony slate soils. The vineyards of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which are among the best in the Moselle, have been considered for decades to be world famous and a guarantee of quality. Many areas are planted with vines whose roots are intact and some of which are over 100 years old, with small berries rich in aroma.

21 hectars of steep vineyards

The Selbach-Oster winery cultivates 24 hectares of vines in the world-famous sites of Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel. The vines stand on partly extreme steep slopes. The grapes are harvested at the Selbach-Oster winery in several harvest rounds. They are fermented at low temperatures, mainly with wild yeasts, to preserve the freshness and finesse of the fine aromas. The Rieslings have a diverse character: dry and noble sweet, elegant and fine or full-bodied and complex.

Wines and vinification

The winery's focus is on quality and starts with low yields. Maintaining and caring for the vineyards requires an enormous effort - especially in the vineyards with extreme slopes. This is especially true for the harvesting of the grapes in several passes.

Fermentation, mainly by wild yeasts, takes place in the winery's own cellar, slowly and at low temperatures, to preserve the delicate aromas and maintain freshness and finesse. Half of the wines mature quietly in traditional oak barrels. These do not give off any woody notes to the wine, allow it to breathe and positively influence the maturation process.
