Highest quality respecting nature and terroir

Inge and Bernhard Kirsten have been making a name for themselves in the wine world since 1992. The castle estate is run in an ecological way. Their philosophy is: respect for nature and sustainable action in the vineyard during the harvest and in the cellar management. This is how authentic wines are created, marked by the terroir, without superfluous interventions, which embody the particular terroir of the Moselle. Organic certification is particularly important to the estate.

The Kirsten family has discovered a passion for winemaking. As Mosel winegrowers, they are convinced that the best wines can be produced on the steep slopes of schist. Their biggest challenge is the work in the vineyards, as well as in the cellar.

A great variety of grapes are available

More than 14 grape varieties are grown in the Schlossgut. Mainly Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Pinot Noir. They also produce three different types of sparkling wine. They produce wines rich in aromas and minerals, depending on the location, sun exposure and particular soil conditions.

Wine from the best locations and perfect climatic conditions

Recognition from wine experts and enthusiasts is the logical consequence of their work. British wine critic Stuart Pigott praised the Kirstens, attesting to the "sensational quality" of their Riesling Sekt Brut and highlighting the richness of the aromas, from peach to apple to tangerine. Gault & Millau awards the Kirsten winery two grapes and highlights in particular the 6-hectare share of the top vineyard Klüsserather Bruderschaft. The name goes back to a monastic brotherhood from the 17th century. The winery's Riesling Herzstück Spätlese comes from this site and was rated "very good" by Gault & Millau.

Vineyards

The winery cultivates several parcels in the best vineyards around Klüsserath.

These are located in the following sites, among others:

  • Klüsserather Bruderschaft
  • Köwericher Lauretiuslay
  • Pölicher Held
  • Mehringer Zellerberg
  • Longuicher Maximer Herrenberg
  • Longuicher Dicke Kuh

Management and philosophy

The winery has long been involved in environmental and conservation measures in viticulture. One relies on natural cellar methods, long ripening periods and spontaneous fermentation. In recent years, the winery has produced top wines such as the Riesling "1904", "von Geldern pur", "Herzstück" and the "Heldensekt".

While primarily focusing on dry wines, the harvest from the Pölicher Held is developed into sweet wines and sparkling wines due to the special western slope location.

Vision and values

Our visions and values point in one direction: to build an outstanding Mosel winery with top quality wines, in which the preservation of the unique Mosel cultural landscape and the sustainable management of our vineyards play a central role. In the Moselle region in particular, this management requires not only a massive commitment to the craft, but above all passion and personal dedication in order to produce exceptional, independent wines. In Schloss Liebieg in Kobern-Gondorf on the terraced Moselle, a charming ensemble of hotel, restaurant, vinotheque and modern winery is being built at the same time.
