The famous vineyard site "Ürziger Würzgarten" is the only site in this wine-growing region that has a volcanic soil in combination with red slate (rhyolite). You can only find this red slate in this part of the Moselle valley.
Another special feature are the extremely old rootless vines. While most European vineyards were destroyed by phylloxera from 1860 onwards, the vines in this region could not be attacked by phylloxera due to their stony subsoil.
Food recommendation: Goes well with meat dishes with sauce, chicken and fish in all varieties.

Mönchhof
The Mönchhof vineyard in Ürzig is one of the oldest vineyards on the Moselle. As early as 1177, Pope Alexander III confirmed the Cistercian Abbey of Himmerod's ownership of the vineyards in Ürzig. At that time, the monks built the vaulted cellar that still exists today. Today's winery building dates back to 1509.
